New delivery drivers: Going beyond delivery

by | Jul 2, 2018 | 0 comments

It almost guaranteed that, while being a delivery driver is your primary role for the auto parts business, you will also be called on to perform other duties such as preparing orders, restocking shelves, cleaning displays, and, once you have some experience, you may even see some counter duty during hectic times.
It’s important to bring the right attitude to these opportunities:

1—See them as opportunities to learn. Even if you’re asked to help clean the shipping area, use it as a time to talk to experienced shipping staff and others. It will help build you personal knowledge of the business.
2—Picking orders and stocking shelves provides some real insight into the logistics side of the business. Why are parts located the way they are? How do you know how many is enough? Why is record keeping so critical?
3—The front showroom area is where even trade customers get their first impressions. Keeping it organized and well stocked is a process, not a destination. It is never finished, just kept in shape through daily attention.
4—If you’re called on to answer a customer call, it’s okay to tell them you’re new. Do your best to help them, but don’t hesitate to ask for assistance if needed. Customers were new once too; they will understand.
5—If you have no deliveries on occasion, ask if there’s something you can help with. You cannot underestimate how great an impression this simple inquiry can make.
